Aromatherapy: Using Essential Oils

Rose oilAromatherapy is the art of using essential oils to benefit your physical, spiritual and psychological well-being. Essential oils are dynamic substances distilled from plant matter such as flowers, leaves, seeds, roots, or woods. The essential oil in its natural state possesses a complex nature that is unique and difficult to reproduce synthetically, if at all. Some of the oils contain substances that don’t occur anywhere else in nature (an example is pure rose oil). Many of the oils have been traditionally used for fragrance, for promoting health and well-being and for use in worship, to promote relaxation and spiritual awareness.

RosemaryHow do essential oils work?

Essential oils affect us in two ways: through our sense of smell and through our skin. The aroma is absorbed through our nose to the olfactory nerve, then on to the limbic portion of the brain where memory, hunger, sexual response or emotions are evoked. Before an aroma enters our consciousness, our subconscious mind has already received and reacted to it. Because of the nature of this action, aromatherapy can benefit stress-related problems and promote a positive state of energy, health and well-being.

Essential Oils

Essential OilsWhen applied to the skin, 100% pure essential oils with their relatively small, lipid-soluble molecular structure are absorbed through the skin directly into the bloodstream where they reach deeply into the circulatory system to cleanse, restore and encourage cellular health, tissue and muscular tone. The action is usually achieved through massage with an essential oil diluted in a carrier oil or through bathing with the essential oils added to the water. Other ways to use the oils are compresses over affected areas of the body, as air purifiers and antiseptics, in creams and oils for skin care, as inhalations or in oil diffusers.

Synergy

Essential Oils are synergistic in nature; when certain oils are blended, they mutually enhance their respective powers in a way that enhances their energy. When such a level is reached, you get a synergy. When we blend our oils, we follow recipes exactly.
